The Secret Wishlist - Preeti Shenoy

The Secret Wishlist

    Author - Preeti Shenoy
·        Genre : Fiction
·         Price: Rs. 175/-
·         Pages: 256
·         Publishers: Westland Ltd

a   About the Author -

I  have been a regular reader of Preeti Shenoy's work.Has read all of her books. Life is what you make it is my personal favorite  I was very excited and was eagerly waiting for her latest book 'The Secret Wishlist" , that  came in with a very promising blurb and trailer and it doesn't disappoint at all. I was hooked to it whole night. Preeti is known for her simple and easy-to-connect characters which make you feel they are so existent. They could be you, me or anyone of us for that matter.

About the Book -

The secrest Wishlist is  the story  starts off in Chennai, Diksha – a daughter, a sister, a wife, a daughter-in-law, a mother – all this and much more but herself. Diksha is married to a Sandeep, who earns well and is giving all the pleasures of life to his wife and son. The only problem with Sandeep is, he is too insensitive towards Dikhsha and whenever she tries to share her life with him, he snaps out of it (as most of indian husdand do) . This book is a story about her journey of finding her own self.

Apparently, Diksha got married when she was 19. At the age of 16, She was like any other typical teenager. She and her best friend Tanu spend hours and hours of time studying, discussing the latest crushes and gossiping. Then, enters  Ankit, Diksha’s elder brother’s friend.Apparently, She falls in love with Ankit and was caught while kissing him. A mistake ( according to her family ) that she made when she was 16 and that laid the foundation of her boring and non-eventful life ahead. One delicate mistake and her life takes a U-turn.

However, a unexpected event in her cousin’s life seems to shake her out of her existence and  makes her realise the importance of living life and her desire to be happy. Thus, she decides to try and take some control over her life and makes a wishlist – a list of things which she truly wants to do in life.

My Thoughts -

Whenever someone asks me to recommend a non-fiction book, Preeti's books are always in the list Reasons are -  firstly, all her books are simple, easy to read and  the reader instantaneously connect with the story from the very first page . Secondly ,She always manages to keep the reader hooked  till the end. And last but not the least, they are damn interesting like a bollywood masala movie.

The Story of Secret Wishlist is too real. Something which anyone can relate to ,especially if you are a woman. And more especially if married one, struggling with mid-life crisis that most women go through nowadays- both housewives and career women. The plethora of opportunities and the quest to live life to the fullest leaves many of us feeling lagging behind in living our dreams. If you're a woman in your 30's - It will definitely take you down memory lane to re-live your school days, childhood friendships, fun times, silly laughs, cheap thrills, gossips, first-crush excitement.

Rating - A+

Verdict - All you pretty ladies go and grab this one.Your book shelve will definitely be proud to own one.Book that every women must read for sure :)

Book Review - What Young India Wants?

Book Review: What Does Chetan Bhagat Want?
What Young India Wants

Book Review: What Young India Wants

Author: Chetan Bhagat
Publisher: Rupa Publications (2012)

After a series of 5 masala novels full of the typical Modern Indian drama, sex, sensationalism, cricket, politics, wealth and youth Chetan Bhagat gives a chance to realism. (And yet, reading Chetan Bhagat is sheer fun.)
I’ve read all his works, enjoyed reading the masala bit, but had nothing to take away from them. All of them have been just another Dabangg or Rowdy Rathod on the Indian bookshelf, definitely unworthy to be termed as literature or even anything close to it.

Now my question is WHAT DOES CHETAN BHAGAT WANT? (Apart from wealth and popularity of course!) His previous works of fiction that made him the best selling Indian author have been all about the crooked Indian youngsters, indulging in everything against the social norms, be it sleeping with the dean’s daughter, making out in public, stealing exam papers, encouraging corruption or well simply being immoral for selfish needs. And woaah! With an attempt to realism he turns all idealistic?

It wouldn’t be wrong to say Chetan Bhagat’s What Young India Wants? Was not a best seller because it had no masala, rather it is filled with overdose of realism.

I started reading the book because I liked the underlying statement of the book- Young India wants a good life! But living in a country where nothing seems great- politically, economically and even culturally these days, the explanations, advices, and description of all that is ruined or can be improved and all that talking about the drawbacks is no less than a torture. Ram Raj is over and it won’t be coming back. And I wonder if the congress or the BJP have already approached the Mr Bhagat to decorate their false promises, aah! I mean their 2014 election campaign speeches.
Bhagat reflects his depth of thought, knowledge and exposure to the world and India through- ‘What Young India Wants?’ But it is way too preachy and idealistic to connect with the Young India. Mr. Bhagat should probably join the likes of Team Anna. All that fasting shall hopefully lessen all that idealism.
And I’d still say this one is the best by Bhagat so far for the attempt, the depth and insight! Read it for what it’s worth.
But the question still remains ‘WHAT YOUNG INDIA WANTS?’

A Super Hero Protests the Hike in Auto Fares

A Super Hero Protests the Hike in Auto Fares

A Super Hero Protests the Hike in Auto Fares
As a child I was always attracted to Super-Heroes, sure they did look extremely silly wearing the underwear on top but it didn’t matter! As I grew older (not mature) I figured out that Super Heroes are as real as Koena Mitra’s stats.
But a recent bit of news renewed my faith. A model by the name of Reema Sharma stood up against the hike in Auto Fares! She is my new super-hero. Especially because she went from bare minimum to bare-naked to protest against them.
What better way to show your protest than by shedding your clothes and writing on your bare back with a red marker, at least that’s one way you can have men’s undivided attention.
The irony of the fact is that this girl never uses public transport, she doesn’t have a clue and I’m guessing neither does her driver. Unlucky for her, the driver took a day off and she had to manage her way like us normal people do…
So she opted for an Auto…
Now I’m not known for being smart, but even I have enough sense to realize that when I have protested against someone with nude pics, the last thing I want to do is actually ask for their help.
Reema Sharma, who’s not the brightest crayon in the box, flagged an auto, none stopped for some ‘odd reason’. Finally one came but he said that his meter was broken and she’d have to pay according to his tariff card. Suddenly the Gandhi in Sharma began to show, and she protested against this guy.
The dude is an auto driver, so obviously he’s a ‘Masters in Hindi & Bhojpuri Language Profanities’. And he was kind enough to share his extensive vocabulary with the “Super-Model”. Reema said that he had recognized her face from the pics that had been aired on some TV news shows and that is why this privilege was being extended towards her . Now I’m completely sure the last line was a bloody lie, No guy—and I mean No guy will look at the face of a nude photo let alone remember it (*winks)
Regardless of whatever Reema Sharma did, she only did it to help the common man, so I still like her.
I mean, who needs Superman’s X-ray vision when you have girls like these hanging around? (*winks violently enough to give Baba Ramdev a run for his money)
But I wish if only she keeps using her super powers for somethings that are more important right now, like “Stand against Corruption” or “Wear a helmet”. Even “Use hand sanitizers after peeing in public” would have done. it was enjoyable the first hundred times I had seen it. Now everyone is as bored of you as they are of that KRK dude. We’d rather watch Sanjay Dutt dancing in a revealing pink top and a schoolgirl skirt than you, at least that would be some amount of entertainment.
‘Kismat Paisa Love Dilli’ has no luck, no money, no love, and has embarrassed ‘Dilli’ so much that all the illegal immigrants have decided to shift away instantly. Vivek and Malika, let’s hope this is your last recycle. My LED screen isn’t strong enough to withstand another hit with a hockey stick in case you decide to make more songs.
Please!

Things to be banned in India

Things we can BAN!

Top 5 things we can BAN!
Since our country is at an all time high of banning everything that moves nowadays, I figured why not add a few more things to the list.
5) Akshay Kumar’s Grin: Every time Akshay grins it makes my God shake in his platinum plated golden throne. It is the word of my god to Ban his disturbingly crazy smile from this world!
4) Women Drivers: Everyone knows that, women shouldn’t be out of the kitchen. Hence women drivers should either be banned, or Maruti better start making Cars with stoves inside them.
3) Technology: This tech boom is the main reason why people have stopped worshipping the gods. We should ban all mobiles, laptops, computer, and internet! That way everyone will be miserable—just like us!
2) Songs: Bollywood Songs influence our generation the most. So remember that every time you play Chikni Chameli, your daughters will want to turn into prostitutes! To protect the dignity of women, we must ban all the songs from all the movies.Special songs like Halkat Jawani , chikni chameli,Honey Singh.
1) Ban all Indian Actress: These women who dress in skimpy clothes and strut around the screen give bad principles to the current generation! Our customs do not allow such behavior! We should BAN all the actress. If they compulsory have to show actress on screen, then the actress should always be dressed in clothes larger than a circus tent and should be inside a kitchen!

Another Worth reading article by - Chetan Bhagat

My mother worked for 40 years. My wife is the COO at an international bank. It makes me proud. She doesn't make phulkas for me. We outsource that work to our help, and it doesn't really bother me. If my wife had spent her life in the kitchen, it would have bothered me more.

One,
a man who marries a career woman gets a partner to discuss his own career with. A working woman may be able to relate better to organizational issues than a housewife. A spouse who understands office politics and can give you good advice can be an asset.
Two,
a working woman diversifies the family income streams. In the era of expensive apartments and frequent lay-offs, a working spouse can help you afford a decent house and feel more secure about finances.
Three,
a working woman is better exposed to the world. She brings back knowledge and information that can be useful to the family. Whether it's the latest deals or the best mutual fund to invest in, or even new holiday destinations, a working woman can add to the quality of life.
Four,
the children of a working woman learn to be more independent and will do better than mollycoddled children.
Five,
working women often find some fulfillment in their jobs, apart from home. Hence, they may have better life satisfaction, and feel less dependent on the man. This in turn can lead to more harmony.

We must accept and even celebrate our successful women. They take our homes ahead and our country forward. We may have less hot phulkas, but we will have a better nation. — Chetan Bhagat

Dont know how many times we criticize this man, But we must agree that we have read all of his books, no matter how cheezy thay are. But there is something in his wwritings & thoughts that have given a new perspective to our generation. Here's another heart touching article by him..
i wish all men could think like him :)

Review of Sahib Biwi Gangster Returns

Review of Sahib Biwi Gangster Returns

Release date – 8'th March 2013

One Line which describes the film –Anything is fair in love and war .

Best  Dialogues –

Saheb-   Wo hamari sarkari biwi hai, sarkar to hai , par kisi kaam ki nahi

Biwi“ Hume mard hi kyun milte hai... Shayar kyun nahi milte ! ”

Gangster-  “ Hamari gali pe bhi taali padti hai ”

Genre –  Drama / Thriller

Story -
Tigmanshu Dhulia , Sanjay Chauhan

Music – Sandeep Chowta

Producer -  Tigmanshu Dhulia , Rahul Mittra , Nitin Tej Ahuja

Direction Tigmanshu Dhulia

Budget – 7 crores

The sequel is shot in the same haveli  in Deogarh which witnessed the  love, lust ,bloodshed and betrayal in the first part . Saheb  is in a wheel-chair and still making money by settling other people’s scores .He has started believing that the haveli  controls the lives and minds of its inhabitants . The paths of the Gangster,  Saheb and   Biwi cross when Saheb’s step-mother, plants the idea of an heir and a second wife in Saheb's mind.

The lead characters are introduced in the same fashion as in the first part .If the earlier one was a  fast and raunchy bedroom drama with sharp minded scheming characters who weave a web of relationships,  this one moves out of  the bedroom and focuses on  the political issue of division of the state .
Though the film is an extravagant and grander version of the one we watched two years ago, it is slow with  confused characters who keep falling in and out of love without any strong reasons or motives .  Every character is grey, they have their own selfish motives, their own insecurities and their own internal conflicts to resolve. The saving grace of the film lies in it's powerful dialogues and great acting .

Irrfan Khan 's character starts off nice. There's a scene where he interviews a politician who is busy watching porn on his laptop .But as the film progresses he is shown to be losing his focus . The climax makes you ponder on  what Irrfan was set to accomplish and what he achieves finally.

Jimmy Shergill as Saheb is flawless and spellbinding . His character has the maximum no. of shades . From the man who hates his wife , to a man who can go to any lengths to get the woman he wants  ,to settling scores with those who crossed his way, he is just perfect . His dialogue  jante ho mard itni galiyan kyun dete hain…kyunki woh rote kum hain”  is followed by claps and whistles from the audience.

Mahie Gill is perfect as the seductive and lusty Biwi .  Her drunken enactments and dialogue delivery is flawless . Despite the history she shares with Saheb she still has feelings for him which may be shown in Part3.

Soha Ali has given a good performance ,though her character lacks the spice to stay in the third and maybe the finale of this saga.

The song ' Bas chhal, kapat, prapanchh hai , Har swaarth ka yeh munch hai'   reminds us of the song 'Arambh hai prachand ' from  Gulaal (2009)

In a line though the story doesn't end here , it's excellent dialogues manage to create enough curiosity for Part 3.

Must watch for Jimmy Shergill 's fans and people who liked the first part .

Rank - 5 (Out of the 15 films I have seen in 2013)
