Dear Hypocrite Civil Society,
Let me tell you, we are not proud to be a part of you & Guess what? This is just the beginning. I’m loving the outrage but where are we really going? It’s the conviction rate that’s more worrying than the death penalty being sanctioned for rape – and why, again, do we have high courts where marital rape doesn’t even make a case?
How are we going to prevent sexual assault when our top cops think skirts cause it? How do we get rid of rapist politicians with skeletons in their closets? I don’t know, but we’re outraged, so let’s make the most of it.
The first thing we can do is teach ourselves before we teach our children. Then demand better laws and their implementation. Human rights are universal but they need their own protection. Someone on Twitter raised a good question: ‘If rapists are punished, who’d vote for the government?’
So as we take the fight to the streets, let’s take it further to the EVM machines. Let’s dump the politicians who dream of having the powers of prime minister without the accountability. They may bicker among themselves on our TV screens but which one of them stood up to smash patriarchy? Are they really worthy, are they good enough to sit for five years on that ‘kursi‘? Now don’t go on and defend your favorite party. If they had any intent for a solution, there’d be an emergency session of Parliament.
And special Thanks to Sheila ma'am,for shutting bars and pubs down at 1 AM in Delhi so that rapists and molesters now have a time-bound job. Your decision has made is so much more convenient for them to manage their work and home lives and their alternative ones.
No civil rights movement ever really made it without political will power. While the elite think women’s rights are merely to be debated, we must make them the need of the hour. The Parliamentarians are still discussing reservation because women haven’t acquired any vote-bank qualifications. We’ve heard them say ” we worship the goddess” but not a word about the 1 million girls aborted. If they were so serious, they have done something about it.
You and I – left or right – need to make sure that every crime is accounted for. If the law and its guardians cannot and will not help us out here and make sure that our lives and safety are their first priority, then what choice are we left with except walking around with a semi-automatic?
All I want to say is, while we’re outraging, let’s not forget the cause of it. Let’s demand gender-sensitive, gender-neutral laws on it because when the anger fades, laws will still remain the same,
Sincerely,
Young Feminist
